Volunteer Services

Our volunteers at Northwood come in many shapes and sizes. We are proud to have over 400 dedicated volunteers supporting the needs of our staff, residents, clients and our community. Our volunteers are based out of all our Northwood Campuses in Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Beaverbank, as well as other areas throughout Nova Scotia.

We currently have 6 main Volunteer roles and are always assessing these roles based on demands and the unique skill sets of our volunteers. Our current volunteer roles include:

Core Volunteer Program

Northwood Broadcasting Club NWBC

Music and Entertainment

Spiritual Care

Pet Therapy

After School Youth Program

  • For our Core Volunteer program, a minimum once per week shift is required for a period of at least 4 months. This will ideally be scheduled for the same day and time each week and will range from 2 to 3 hours, depending on the role.

  • Most of our resident programming happens during the day, we have a greater need for daytime volunteers including Saturday. Evenings and Sunday volunteer opportunities are much more limited.

  • Most of our volunteer opportunities incorporate communicating with our seniors, therefore, it is important that our volunteers be able to express themselves clearly in the English language. Other languages including ASL are an asset.

  • Volunteer Services does not assist with job shadowing or education placements. References will be provided after volunteering for 20hrs for youth and 40hrs for adults.
